Watson on Jeopardy!

Post by Mike BP on Tue Feb 22, 2011 8:08 am

Well, I don't know if any of you know, but Watson, a supercomputer built by IBM, beat the two most successful jeopardy! players of all time (Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter) in the IBM challenge tournament. It was extremely interesting to watch, and I was surprised that the computer won (even though it did have a reflex advantage over the humans). Nonetheless, what do you think this means for computers in the future?

Hmm.. I remember watching this on Jeopardy! last week, it was quite the tournament. I still think that computers have a LONG way until they can catch up with the human brain, and I have doubts that I'll ever see a computer that is truly intelligent as a human in my lifetime (meaning a computer that can understand human emotions, communicate fully with humans, etc.)

Still, I think this is a great achievement for IBM and computer programming as a whole.

I actually saw this! It was so funny because the smart guy would say the wrong answer and the computer would say the same thing and i would shout out "That is so stupid!"
Hahaha Very Happy

Yeah, I remember that. It's because the computer has to be texted the answers (it can't hear them) and nobody texted responses that other people had to it, so it didn't know that it had already been said. The funniest part for me was in the final jeopardy of one of the parts of the tournament the category was "US Cities" and the computer answered Toronto.

there is no way a human would beat a computer in that situation (now if it was a boxing match, i would bet my money on the human)
